In simple terms, GPMI aims to be a universal connectivity standard that reduces cable clutter and streamlines device setups whilst delivering high-performance communication between all devices.

Its primary goals are:

  • High-bandwidth data transfer: enough bandwidth to stream ultra-high-definition content and transfer large files
  • Power delivery up to 240W/480W: to charge laptops, tablets, and even small desktop monitors.
  • Low-latency audio and video output: crucial for real-time applications like gaming and VR.
  • Universal compatibility: because it’s designed to work across platforms and operating systems.

GPMI’s greatest advantage is its all-in-one versatility. Rather than relying on separate cables for video, data transfer, and charging, GPMI is designed to handle all three through a single connection. This streamlined approach reduces complexity while improving convenience and efficiency.

Manufacturers set to gain from adopting GPMI by reducing the number of ports required on a device, helping produce a sleeker design and lighter hardware with greater flexibility when integrating multiple functions into a single product.

Additionally, GPMI is expected to support next-generation display technologies, including resolutions up to 8K, although final performance capabilities will depend on agreed industry standards.

GPMI vs Traditional Interfaces

Put simply:

  • HDMI is great for video, but it can’t charge your device or handle data.
  • USB does data and power but not high-res video.
  • DisplayPort supports high-resolution video but not universal data or charging.

GPMI aims to support all three and more.  Instead of switching between cables, GPMI offers a one-stop solution for media, data, and power.   The GPMI connector is also designed with smart switching logic. This means it can dynamically prioritise the type of signal that needs the most bandwidth, whether it’s video, file transfers, or charging, without compromising speed or quality.

GPMI Could Face Significant Challenges

GPMI is the brainchild of an alliance of Chinese companies, known as the Shenzhen 8K UHD Video Industry Cooperation Alliance (SUCA), including HiSilicon, Huawei, TCL, Hisense, and Tencent. They want to break free from the US-controlled standards and be able to adapt faster to a changing world.  But standardisation is also critical. Before manufacturers can confidently adopt GPMI, industry groups must agree on technical specifications and interoperability guidelines as well as certification requirements. Without clear standards, compatibility issues will emerge across different brands and devices.

For GPMI to succeed, it needs strong industry backing and a compelling reason for users to move beyond the connectivity technologies already in use today.
